Warning signals: Strained or tired eyes
Frequent blinking - Red or Watery eyes
Headaches when reading - Sensitivity to light Squinting - Blurred vision - Spots before the eyes Difficult focus - Frequent rubbing or itchy eyes

Glaucoma increased pressure within the eye damages nerve cells that transmit information from the eye to the brain. At an examination, optometrists will check the eye pressure of anybody over 40. Once glaucoma is diagnosed, medication or surgery is used to reduce the pressure.

Cataracts A cataract makes the lens cloudy, causing vision to become hazy, as if looking through a dirty window. The lens also becomes thicker and denser, which may require frequent changes of glasses. UV radiation accelerates the formation of cataracts. So wearing a hat is a good idea. Surgery is the only cure. The damaged lens is removed and a plastic replacement is inserted.

Age Related Macular Degeneration
One in 7 people over the age of 50 have Macular Degeneration (MD). The macula is the sensitive and central part of the retina, which is important for reading, watching TV and recognising faces. MD may be inherited but progresses rapidly especially when associated with smoking. It is incurable, but the changes to the retina can be controlled. Early detection is the key.

Diabetic Retinopathy
People with diabetes have high levels of glucose, an essential food, in their blood stream. At such levels glucose is a villain that can cause severe damage to blood vessels, including those in the retina. The resulting blurred vision may happen in any part of the eye. Luckily with early recognition it can be controlled.

Short Sighted
Myopia or short sightedness means your eyeball is too long and can’t see distant objects because the image is focused in front of the retina. It runs in the family and 2% of four year olds are myopic,15% of 12 year olds and 20% of 20 year olds.

Long Sighted
Hyperopia or long sightedness occurs when the eyeball is too short so the image is blurred. If its mild, squinting and forcing the eyeball to change shape will help a person see. Glasses and contacts improve reading ability and laser surgery fixes some cases.

Astigmatism
This occurs when the cornea at the front of the eye, distorts vision at all distances. It can cause headaches and eyestrain.

Presbyopia
This makes it hard to focus at normal reading distances. It comes on at about 40, worsens up to 65 and then stays the same. Glasses or contacts help fix the problem

Antioxidants, Vitamins C.E.A, Zinc, Copper, lots of leafy green vegetables and a healthy heart diet are beneficial to eye health and the blood vessels involved with the optic nerve.
