Since early April really marks a strong turn of the seasons, I wanted to touch on some immunity super heroes in the herbal world. With prime flu season upon us, now is the time to gather and prepare all your apothecary powerhouses for the months ahead.
Below are five of my favourite herbs to help bolster winter immunity, along with simple ways to incorporate them into your daily rhythm.
- Elderberry
A traditional winter staple, elderberry is rich in antioxidants and supports the body’s natural immune response. It is especially helpful at the first sign of a cold or flu, where it may assist in reducing the severity and duration of symptoms.
How to take it: Most commonly taken as a syrup, elderberry is easy to incorporate daily during winter. Take a small dose each day as a preventative, and increase at the first sign of illness. It can also be enjoyed as a tea or added to warm drinks.
- Echinacea
Echinacea is best known for its ability to activate the immune system in the early stages of illness. Taken at the onset of symptoms, it can help the body respond more efficiently and may shorten recovery time.
How to take it: Best taken as a tincture or tea at the very first sign of symptoms. Use it consistently over a few days rather than long term, as it works most effectively when the immune system needs immediate support.
- Astragalus
A deeply nourishing herb used in traditional Chinese medicine, astragalus helps to build long term immune strength. It is best taken regularly as a preventative during winter, supporting overall resilience and vitality.
How to take it: Ideal as a daily tonic through the colder months. Add dried astragalus root to soups, broths, or slow cooked meals, allowing it to gently infuse. It can also be taken as a tea or decoction for ongoing immune support.
- Ginger
Warming and stimulating, ginger helps to support circulation and keep the body warm from within. It is particularly useful in the early stages of a cold and also supports digestion, which plays a key role in immune health.
How to take it: Fresh ginger is one of the simplest and most effective remedies. Slice or grate into hot water for a warming tea, add to cooking, or combine with lemon and honey for a soothing winter drink.
- Garlic
Garlic is a powerful antimicrobial herb with a long history of use in fighting infection. It supports immune function and can help the body ward off common winter illnesses, especially when used regularly.
How to take it: For maximum benefit, consume garlic raw or lightly cooked. Crush or chop and allow it to sit for a few minutes before eating to activate its beneficial compounds. Add to meals, dressings, or take with honey if you prefer a milder flavour.
As always, simple daily rituals create the strongest foundation. A warm tea, a nourishing broth, a few intentional additions to your meals can make all the difference over the season.
