Herbal teas and liquid extracts are two of the most popular ways to incorporate herbal botanicals into a daily wellness routine. This guide explains how each format is made, how they differ, and how to decide which suits your lifestyle.

Please read the consumer safety note at the bottom of this page before starting any new herbal preparation.

Side-by-side comparison

Feature Herbal Tea Liquid Extract (Tincture)
Preparation method Dried botanicals steeped in hot water (infusion or decoction) Botanicals macerated in a solvent (typically alcohol and water) to draw out plant constituents
Concentration Lower — concentration depends on steep time, water temperature, and quantity of herb used Higher — the extraction and concentration process results in a stronger preparation per volume
Convenience Requires kettle, steeping time (5–15 min), and straining; best consumed fresh Ready to use; measured in drops or mL; easily carried and added to water or juice
Typical use pattern Often enjoyed as a warm, mindful ritual — morning or evening; preparation time is part of the experience Suited to people who prefer a quick, measured approach or who are frequently on the go
Taste profile Mild to earthy; naturally diluted in water; can be sweetened with honey Concentrated and strong; often botanical or bitter; best diluted in water or juice
Shelf life (once opened) Dried blends typically 12–24 months stored in a sealed container; brewed tea best consumed within 24 hours Generally 2–5 years when stored correctly in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight
Alcohol content None Contains alcohol as a preservation and extraction medium — check label if this is a consideration for you
